On Sunday my Mom came up to visit my sister and I. We took her over to Olea for Brunch on California and Larkin. It was honestly the best brunch I have had in a while. Ontop of that they serve Blue Bottle so it was a done deal. It was great to see her face and spend a day celebrating the 27 years my Mom has been a Mother. She means the world to both of us and she will never know how much inspiration and drive she has passed onto me. Shes the most wonderful woman in the world.

Sorry for the lack of updates people. I feel like I really need to step my game up. With school, work, and these events I've been pretty swamped. Marquez is Next ASUSF President by Wide Margin

Junior Bobby Marquez was declared the next student body president Thursday afternoon following the conclusion of ASUSF elections. Marquez beat incumbent Alex Platt by a margin of 30-percent (501 to 386) and current Off-Campus Representative Jon Coon who received 359 votes.

Three of the four vice president positions were closely contested races. Halimah Najieb-Locke edged-out incumbent Carmen Kestekyan with 52-percent of the vote to Kestekyan’s 45-percent to win the Vice President of Internal Affairs post. Danny Ha will be the next Vice President of Public Relations after receiving 37-percent of the vote, beating Ricardo Hieber (28-percent) who had allied with Marquez and Erick Irigoyen (34–percent) who campaigned with Platt. Incumbent Alia Al-Sharif defeated Shelly Saini with 52-percent of the vote to Saini’s 46-percent in the competition for Vice President of Mission.

The only uncontested Vice President position, business administration, went to incumbent Michelle “My” Nguyen who was voted-in with a 92-percent approval rating.

All of the senate seats were uncontested or without candidates with the exception of Junior Class Representative which was a three-way race for two seats. The positions went to Patrick Sudlow and Justin Setareh while Craig Jordan came in just one vote short of Setareh to finish in third.

Jordan was not eligible to vote in his own race because his credits give him senior standing, despite being a junior, meaning he was only eligible to vote for Senior Class Representative candidates. ASUSF’s Electoral Governing Board is looking into the issue of discrepancies between credit-standing and year in school for next year.

A referendum to continue the MUNI pass program after MUNI increased fees for the passes to $110 per semester, up from $90, passed with 82-percent of students voting in favor of paying the higher price instead of discontinuing the program. It was the only referendum on the ballot.

1260 students, or roughly 26-percent of the undergraduate student body voted in the election, the largest number ever according to Nguyen, and far higher than the 10-percent who voted last year. Students who voted at the station setup outside the Market Café were given a coupon for a free Jamba Juice. An EGB survey found that 50-percent of voters said the Jamba promotion enticed them to go to the polls.

This is the first time in three years that the ASUSF presidential race has been contested. Last year Marquez planned to run against Platt for the position but was forced to drop-out of the race after it was discovered he did not have the 3.0 GPA required to run for president.

Since there was no pre-election polling, student support was hard to gauge going into election week yet most of the Senate Executive Board positions were perceived as being hotly contested. However, Marquez’s decisive victory comes as a surprise to many students who viewed him as a third party “Nader” candidate in relation to Platt and Coon.

Platt is a well recognized figure on campus who spent three years on Senate and is also an executive at USFtv, founded the Women in Media club and has performed in College Players plays, including “Vagina Monologues.” She is generally well-liked by students and was widely expected to win reelection. Meanwhile, Coon ran a high-profile campaign that Nguyen called “One of the best I’ve ever seen.” He enlisted the help of close friend Thomas Roche, a nightclub promoter and popular name on campus who hosted several election parties for Coon as well as a hip-hop concert in Crossroads during dead hour the week before elections.

When Marquez was announced the winner, Nguyen said she was shocked. “I knew Bobby had a lot of on-campus organizations that supported him but I really thought the race was between Jon and Alex,” she said.

Marquez credited his win to a grassroots effort. “I think just talking to students and being cordial is what got me the race,” he said. “People said they liked how approachable I am and how I give them straight answers.”

Marquez also made several campaign promises that attracted voters, including a proposal to spend $2000 of the $7000 stipend he would receive if elected president on an event for students.

Freshman Janet Glynn was not familiar with any of the presidential candidates but voted for Marquez because she liked his proposal to spend his stipend on students. “The other candidates [Coon and Platt] talked in vague terms about communication and involvement; it didn’t mean anything to me. Bobby was promising something concrete and I liked that,” she said.

However, Platt is critical of Marquez’s campaign promises and said that he has still not fulfilled the promises he made when running last year for Off-Campus Representative which included improving student parking and installing lockers for off-campus students. Platt said this year Marquez has made no effort to correct the parking shortage and that it is her, not him, who has been working on a resolution to provide lockers on campus. Platt called his plan to spend $2000 of his stipend on students an “outlandish claim.”

When asked if he planned to make good on the promise to host an event Marquez said, “Of course, It may not be until the spring semester but we’re going to do something. It will be whatever students decide, maybe a rock concert or an event in Crossroads, we will do a survey to see what they want.”

Platt cited a lack of free time as one of the factors that led to her defeat. “I didn’t have time to throw the kinds of campaigns Bobby and Jon did because I was busy being president,” she said. Both Coon and Marquez, as well as candidates for other positions, spent long hours canvassing high traffic areas on campus handing out pins, flyers and business cards.

This election season also saw a number of highly creative campaigns that incorporated a variety of promotional materials and events not seen in past elections. In addition to the traditional posters and Facebook groups, candidates made websites and T-shirts and one student, Al-Sharif, donned a costume around campus. “[Al-Sharif] campaigned endlessly, walking around all week in a super-woman costume,” said Nguyen.

In reaction to the results, Platt said, “I took it way better than I thought I was going to.” She is disappointed but already looking forward and hopes to focus her energy in other ways on campus, including by strengthening the Women in Media club she founded.

Jon Coon was unavailable for comment on this article but gave Marquez a congratulatory handshake before leaving the Green & Gold room where the election results were announced Thursday evening.

ASUSF President A Highly Contested Seat

"The ASUSF Senate race is on, and this year three candidates are running for president, which may lead to a much more involved campaigning process than last year when current President Alex Platt, ran unopposed. This spring, Platt is running for reelection, along with opposing candidates Jon Coon and Bobby Marquez, who are currently off-campus representatives.

The increased competition may have sparked some of the candidates’ decisions to create websites to campaign for their positions. Coon and Platt both have websites which they are promoting with outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. Perhaps inspired by U.S. President Barack Obama’s innovative web campaign, the new online presence allows USF student voters to get to know and interact with their candidates more than a paper campaign flier would allow.

Platt’s website, PlattForPres.com, features sections with a biography, campaign promises for next year, and a blog on campaign updates. She uses a brightly colored logo and many photos from her various endeavors at USF, from working with USFtv, shooting a music video for Wyclef Jean, to posing on the set of the College Players’ production of the Vagina Monologues.

Coon’s website, WhoIsJonCoon.com, uses the campaign slogan “Who is Jon Coon?” to define himself as a student and candidate. Coon’s site includes a biography, an extensive description of why he is running for ASUSF president, a link to his personal blog where voters can learn more about him, and even videos for people to see him in action. Coon’s website and campaign is being run by successful nightclub promoter and USF junior Tom Roche.

Marquez took the traditional option of creating a Facebook group for which he lists the many organizations supporting him and list of his campaign promises, including an offer to spend $2,000 of his would-be stipend to host an event for USF students. The president’s total stipend is $7,000.

All of these online platforms allow USF voters to question and interact with their candidates. Maybe this spring’s elections, running April 23-27, will actually draw a voter turnout above last year’s ten percent."

With living exhibitions that will travel through San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York the project will be showcased in a variety of outlets, creating access for a range of viewers to see these intimate, yet objective images, and to understand what life is like in The Tenderloin.

The project will ultimately culminate by publishing the images in book form, with proceeds from the sales being donated to organizations that promote and give access to art in The Tenderloin. This, we feel, will allow our project to live on for years and generations to come in the form of art within the community. "

If you are not familiar with KIVA, in short, it is a micro loan program where you, the lender, is able to send "micro loans" to entrepreneurs in distressed communities. Instead of just giving money, food, or clothing, you are giving others the opportunity that you had.

So I'm fairly certain that this is the busiest I have ever been in my life. I'm taking 5 classes, working 20 hours a week downtown, as well as working on the WHOISJONCOON campaign. With shirts about to go into print, I am also working on the concept for a look book we will be shooting. Yesterday on my way to tennis class, I came across this vintage desk on the street. The desk fit right in with the concept I am trying to create so I decided to come back for it later that night.

When I got back to the den, I talked Jon into coming with me to pick it up. Upon arrival, we realized that there was no way in hell it was fitting in my car... With the realization at hand, it was only necessary to have mr. president himself lay on his back and hold onto the desk while I smashed home.

The best part of the story...
we drove by a total of 4 cops on the way home...

"Hinoki takes its name from the hinoki cypress, a tree that only grows in Japan and is the preferred wood for building palaces, temples, shrines and the finest wooden soaking baths. It was inspired by a visit to Tawaraya, a famous three-centuries-old traditional Japanese inn located in Kyoto. Soaking in the legendary open-air hinoki ofuro (wooden bath) filled with warm spring water on a chilly morning, the idea for the perfume was born and the result is breathtaking. The ofuro is captured perfectly: the full, rich scent of the wood, the smells of the surrounding greenery, the soft touch of meditative incense, the memories of native moss. Hinoki is a dry, woody-fresh scent with an intangible ”something” that gives it a mystical edge and the ability, much like CdG’s Incense Series, to conjure the exact emotion and feel of the idea behind its creation and name."

When I take breaks, I walk by men and women and wonder where they work, their position, and their interests. Last night at the Ambassador I got the chance to meet Steve from Rivera PR. Today I checked out their blog and realized that they were helping out with the Marketing/PR side of things at the new Vintage 415 restaurant. The Tipsy Pig is located down in the Marina on Chestnut Street and serves a wide menu of American dishes. I can't wait to check it out.

Lykke Li Concert

This chick killed it. I know I've been hyping her pretty damn hard on the blog these days, but every word was backed to the fullest. She played a sold out show on Sunday at the FILLMORE and I expected nothing less. Best part were the covers she did- "a milli" & "can I kick it". Footage here.

The opening band, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, was a female vocalists with a very talented percussionist. If you missed the show make sure to try and catch her next time.

I strongly recommend seeing Lykke Li if you get the chance. Stay on top of this young talent's blooming career.

9 TO 5: HYPEBEAST interview with Mega of BLVCKSCVLE

"Parked within the industrial outskirts of downtown Los Angeles, I find myself surrounded by an unfamiliar scenery, barely reflecting the stereotypical vision of LA. I catch a glimpse of Black Scale’s Michael Yabut aka MEGA and Alfred De Tagle around the corner of Elm Company headquarters, proudly paying tribute to their well received label with Black Scale gear and a HUF 5-panel, of course.

An integral part of HUF’s growth within San Francisco’s streetwear scene, MEGA quickly reflects an inviting personality shared through his experiences in the retail industry and love for the culture.

“I love sneakers, I was always hunting for the rare sneaks since 1995. When HUF first opened up in SF it was a shoe boutique releasing all the rare and hard to find sneakers at that time. I was a customer standing in line and calling the shop bugging the boys about the new sneaks that will be coming out. The sneaker scene in the Bay Area is huge and having HUF as one of those outlets to get our sneaks made our lives easier. Being a customer lead to being friends with the HUF crew and that eventually transcended into working at the shop. I would always stop by and see what was going on and one day I asked Kyle Demers and Nao Nogata which were the managers at that time about job openings and both guided me to talk to Keith Hufnagel. Keith and I spoke and he kept me in mind and when Kyle left to New York I got my chance to work at the store.”

An understudy, of sorts, to professional skateboarder and HUF owner Keith Hufnagel, MEGA speaks of Keith’s massive influence:

“Watching Keith make moves was inspiring. He definitely taught us a lot about the business and being independent within the industry. I feel he made it easy for us to understand the business and industry as a whole. He influenced me in many ways but the main thing I will always take with me is he really cared not just about the business but his team that worked under him. The man’s drive is

amazing and being around that makes me push harder. It’s not everyday you meet someone that is willing to teach you the business and also give you the blessing when moving forward. He definitely trusted us with the stores and that in itself made us work harder because he made us feel that we were a part of HUF as a whole.”

Sharing an apparent love for fashion and design with his close friend and business partner, MEGA’s graphic integration of unnoticed issues relating to religion, government, identity and death, serve as the template for everything that represents Black Scale as a lifestyle more so than a brand:

“The whole aesthetic behind Black Scale has deep meaning that is expressed through simple and classic designs based on our life experiences. We always dreamed about having a clothing line. We never really planned on it till one day my partner Alfred and I thought it was the right time to push out a couple tees. The response we got from our first season was so strong and inspirational that we knew we had a great responsibility on our shoulders to share our experiences with the people.”

Of course with any brand comes the integrity involved within the quality of the product that’s engineered. “I feel the materials you use for garments are very important. The quality control and how pieces are constructed are things we are learning now before we release more pieces in the future. We have been searching for quality materials that we feel will go with our future collections. Keeping the classic look with the quality still attached to it.”

Sky’s on Pico Street seems like the proper location to continue MEGA’s penchant for philosophical views on just about any subject. A preview of Black Scales upcoming material furthermore exemplifies a strong appreciation for how each of their previous five seasons have come to fruition. “We design with the philosophy that every detail has meaning within the design.

Every image, every word & every shape used has meaning.” Focusing on material quality, the scene of exclusivity takes a back seat as MEGA concedes “although die hard customers that love the limited lifestyle disagree with new consumers having accessibility to the brands that were once hard to find, I see more people getting into this lifestyle even in these tough times for stores and brands”.

While the scene has steadily slowed down due to over-saturation, cookie-cutter labels, and mainly economic downfalls, it still remains the brainchild of a generation that’s seen tremendous success by a multitude of youthful entrepreneurs whether it be clothiers, artists or media outlets. “It’s great to see the industry grow and I am confident it will grow even larger in the years to come. It’s also great to see the brands grow and become power houses that can compete with the larger brands that have already put a stamp on the marketplace. It’s not the greatest times economically right now but if we ride the wave for a couple years I think the marketplace will boom harder than ever. I feel it’s great to see more customers support what we love and seeing more people on the streets get into what was once a super tight knit circle in every city that represented “in the know” limited lifestyle. “I get inspired by many designers from high end to contemporary to street. It’s amazing to see the big fashion houses look to street artists and vice versa. Our new generation of artists and designers get it, I think everyone is trying to figure out what separates them from others and still keeping it relevant. It’s so many people to name and so

many brands to consider I think I will say in the end I like many but I will only wear a few.”

With the day coming to a close we arrive at a location nestled away in a Hollywood community shared with some well known personalities, the pad plays host to stacks of HUF fitted’s well into the triple digits and a welcoming environment, reflective of the fellas character. Developed organically with time, Black Scale may owe a portion of its success to the contributers involved in the brands manifestation, but mainly the two head honchos in charge of every aspect of the brand. “All of the designs stem from the original inspirations of the brand. We decide on how each particular design relates to our ideals & how that design is meant to represent our way of thinking. We’re always pushing each other to create new ways to express our collected knowledge to the public. It’s amazing.”

Entering their seventh season, 2009 seems like the appropriate time to engage into further aspects of the brand. The focus remains steadily on Black Scale’s vision for a new approach to the unknown."
